 Assessment Of Solar Pv-Grid Parity In Akure, South-West Nigeria.

Solar energy potential in Akure, South-West Nigeria is considered substantial. Deployment as an alternative or additional electric energy source is also considered possible. However, the unit cost of the energy so produced is exorbitant compared to the cost of its grid counterpart thereby slowing down appreciable deployment. Considering the advantages of solar energy over conventional energy sources in terms of cleanness, environment friendliness, renewability and free availability, this work cost-comparatively analyzes both sources of energy with a view to assessing the timing of its parity with grid supply and factors which may influence early achievement of this condition. It was discovered that solar PV-grid parity is attainable only on the long term in the study region. Noting that the average useful life of solar panels is 25 years on account of cell degradation, it is important that parity and consequently, energy cost superiority over grid supply is achieved within the short to medium term. This way, the superior advantages of solar PV over other conventional sources of energy may be widely accessed. This work suggests action plans that may be pursued to achieve this.

 Analysis Of Generating Capacity Dynamics Of The Nigerian Power System Between 1963 And 2020.

A study of the growth dynamics of the installed capacity of the Nigerian Power System from 1963 to date was done. Perspective available generating capacity was estimated based on service life of existing installed capacity. The sufficiency of generating capacity for future normal operating modes of the system was estimated based on a power load growth forecast from 2003 to 2020. An analysis of the results shows that all the installed capacity since 1963 to the late 80s would have expired by 2020 i.e outlived their rated service lives. At present, only about 4.9 GW (80%) of total installed capacity is valid. Considering the national goal of significant economic development and estimated load forecast of over 8 GW by 2020, there is an urgent need to renovate or replace expired generating units besides the planned building of new power stations which have long gestation periods.
